J.B. MILLS Presents

THE BEAT SOX SESSIONS

“Raw and rugged, The Beat Sox Sessions hit hard. Stripped down and funky, these tracks sound like they were made with breakbeats, but it’s the drumming of producer/composer/ musician J.B. Mills himself. He truly understands the role of the drums and knows how to make them sound just right.” - Scotty Hard, Producer/Musician (DJ Logic, De La Soul, Melvin Gibbs, Medeski, Martin, & Wood)

“The Beat Sox Sessions are a journey through deep grooves, creative timbres, and vivid sonic landscapes.” - Joe Tomino, Drummer/Producer (Dub Trio, Fugees, Lauren Hill, Meshell Ndegeocello)

“Each track a unique soulful journey definitely worth taking.” - Homeboy Sandman, Rapper (Stones Throw Records)

“I feel like I’m listening to a soundtrack from a movie that summarizes the last 30 years of music. Simple and fun. Playful and weird. Honest and groovy.” - Sasha Dobson, Singer/Songwriter/ Musician (Solo Artist, Puss n Boots)

The Beat Sox Sessions is the first collection of music to be released by Brooklyn-based drummer/multi-instrumentalist Jason B Mills under his producer alias J.B. MILLS Presents. Completed in early 2020, just as the outside world shut down, its 3 instrumental tracks have been described as “cinematic funk”. More obvious influences include seminal soul/funk acts like The Meters and Booker T. & the M.G.’s, but also extend to include the psychedelic global funk of Khruangbin and punchy punk funk of Fugazi, all with a heavy dub underpinning. Jason was also the producer/ bandleader/ drummer/ songwriter behind the Independent Music Awards-nominated band Beetroot, who were a fixture on the NYC club scene in the early 2000s.

All tracks were recorded and mixed by Jason at his Little House Music Studio with a stellar lineup of NYC musicians: Derek Nievergelt-Bass; Wes Mingus-guitars; Jonathan Powell-horns; Jason Mills-drums, percussion, samples & production.

BIO

J.MILLS Presents is the producer alias for Jason B Mills, Brooklyn-based drummer/multi-instrumentalist and sound engineer/designer. The son of a drummer and a weaver, Jason has spent a lifetime in rhythm and composition. After roughly 15 years performing nightly as the lead role in STOMP, both in NYC and on tour globally, Jason now focuses most of his attention on producing various studio projects and has begun releasing them under the umbrella of J.MILLS Presents.

Another of his focuses is the project YUMMY SOUNDS, which includes his son, Aubrey, and fellow former STOMP cast member John Sawicki. The three refer to themselves as “makers of beats and short films about making them”. Episode 02 of their YouTube series was just named an Official Selection of the INDIE SHORTS AWARDS CANNES in the Music Video category.

Previous award nods include a 4th annual Independent Music Awards nomination in the "Album Of The Year" and "Blues/R&B - Song" categories for the Beetroot album "13" and album single "Peel" respectively as writer, producer, and artist, as well as a 14th annual Independent Music Awards nomination in the "EP - Urban" category for Brinae Ali's EP "Destination Forever - Vol. 1" as producer.
